Hundreds come together in NJ for slain teen Trayvon Martin

A Trayvon Martin rally was held on the Jersey shore this week.

Asbury Park, NJ – On March 29th hundreds of people came out to show their support for Trayvon Martin and to unify against social ills that plague their community. The event was organized by Roselle White, Amirah Ryans and Tydie King Shorter’s granddaughter of Asbury Park.

The Trayvon Martin rally event organizers worked in harmony with the Asbury Park Police department to have a successful demonstration for the betterment of their community. The trio just had to do something after learning that Trayvon Martin who was unarmed, was killed by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.

Many believe Trayvon was deemed suspicious because of the clothing he wore that rainy night – a hoodie. With many rallies across the nation, the hoodie has been the central focus. “Do I look suspicious in my hoodie”

The march started on Lake Avenue at the Allah Youth Center and ended at the Presbyterian Church of Neptune-Martin Luther King Jr 15 Memorial Dr, Neptune NJ. The Mayor of Asbury Park Ed Johnson, The President of the Asbury Park/Neptune NAACP Adrienne Sanders, Minister John Mohammed and social activist Rosetta Johnson were several of the hundreds that were in attendance at the event.

Minister John Mohammed had the crowd motivated as they chanted “justice for Trayvon and death to the minds of Zimmerman” as they gathered in the front of the Asbury Park Post Office. He attacked the mentality of those who have the ill mind set that a black life is not worthy of living.

Before the march began, Roselle White emphasized that the march is not a fad but the “start of a new day not only for African Americans but for Americans in general”.

Mayor Ed Johnson indicated that it is very important that we show support for the Martin family. “People need to respect each other. What people are marching for today will lead to steps towards the truth. No matter how we try to hide the truth, it eventually will be revealed”. He said that “we are all God’s children”.

Adrienne Sanders the President of the Asbury Park/Neptune NAACP voiced that the march gives our community a chance to make a stance against this senseless murder. And that we need to “fight against the man who racially profiled Trayvon who only had a bag of skittles.”

Rosetta Johnson a community activist and a retired city worker, emphasized that this march brings awareness to the Asbury Park community. She supports getting justice for the Martin family.

George Zimmerman, the killer of Trayvon Martin has not been arrested or charged, as Zimmerman has claimed self-defense under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground law”. Thousands around the nation are calling for the arrest of Zimmerman.
