Maureen McGovern is an American singer and Broadway actress. She is well known for her premier renditions of the Oscar winning songs “The Morning After” from the 1972 film The Poseidon Adventure, and “We May Never Love Like This Again” from The Towering Inferno in 1974. Now, McGovern brings a brilliant performance to the Two River Theater in the stage play “Carry It On”.

Maureen McGovern in Carry It On

In “Carry It On”, McGovern looks back at her life “in the context of the times and culture that shaped her personal and creative life”. It is amazing how she takes you from her childhood to the present day, decade after decade, with such class and grace inviting the audience a glimpse into her life.

A History Lesson

McGovern begins her journey with a history lesson of the sixties and seventies and the unforgettable moment of racism and the Kent Four massacre.

The Kent Four massacre occurred at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, and involved the shooting of unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard on Monday, May 4, 1970. It was reported that the guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis. McGovern vividly talked about her friend, Sandra Scheuer, who was one of the Kent Four that was killed and how it has affected her life today.

McGovern sounded like a song bird whistling in the wind. She was able to capture the audience with her amazing voice and interact with them with sing alongs. The song “Down Town” seemed to have been one of the audience’s favorite as they clapped and shook their heads to her beautiful voice.

Maureen talked about being the big Six Zero and how it “may not mean quite the same thing it did for our parents” or grandparents generation. “For many of us who lived six decades, our personal history haunts us and we often find ourselves surrounded by memories, unfulfilled dreams, and unanswered questions,” said McGovern.

Maureen McGovern is a testament when she says that the “big six zero” is the new forty. She looked amazingly beautiful and her voice was absolutely scintillating.

I give her performance 5 stars as “Carry It On” is a must see play.
