Long Branch Beach : Teen Goes Missing While Swimming

Authorities continue to search for a 17-year-old boy who say was pulled under the waves at Long Branch Beach Sunday evening.

Missing teen at Long Branch beach

Family and friends reported the teenager missing around 5:41 p.m., according to Long Branch Police Lt. Frank Morey. He was reportedly swimming in the area of Ocean Avenue and Melrose Terrace when friends told police he “went under and didn’t come back up,” Morey said.

While the teen’s name is being withheld, he is being described as Hispanic, 5 feet 6 inches and weighing about 160 pounds. He is believed to be a Paterson resident.

Dive teams from Monmouth Beach, Ocean Township and Sea Bright held water searches while helicopters from the Coast Guard and State Police flew overhead.

It remains unclear why the teen disappeared, according to Morey, who said the section of the Long Branch beach near Melrose Terrace has been closed off due to the search.
