More than 45 students attended the first Black Student Union (BSU) meeting in LAH at Brookdale Community College, Oct 2, at 11:30 a.m.

The room was packed with activity, well wishes, and laughter.
BSU President, Devin Overall, a 20-year-old, fourth semester business major from Colts Neck and BSU Vice President, Darryl Denzel Campbell Jr., a 9-year-old-mathematic major from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, engaged with attendees to share about BSU and announce that an election for officials for this year’s BSU Board would be that day.

A flurry of activity commenced as individual students approached the crowded room of on lookers to introduce themselves and announce that they will be running for candidacy.
Steven Robert Beech, a candidate for vice president of fund raising, and 18-year-old first-semester early childhood major from Freehold shared that he’s, “looking to developing nonprofit events in hopes that it will encourage fundraising for BSU,” such as, “team finance seminars and galas for art programs that will benefit the Black community.”
Arielle Dwyer a 32-year-old, second-semester business major from Red Bank, said that she, “enjoys taking pictures, a very good writer, and is great with being organized.” Dwyer is running for BSU historian.
After the election, students introduced themselves, sipped soda and munched on pizza.
Some of the students that attended the BSU meeting were, Shanice O’Beryl, a 19-year-old second-semester-biology-major from Neptune and president of the West Women Engineering Science Technology Club, Tanika Bullock, a 33-year-old third-semester-business administration/marketing-major from Tinton Falls.
Laughter exploded when students participated in icebreaker questions so that BSU officials could learn a little more about attendees.
Adviser Sheri Standford said on Oct. 10th the Bus for Progress will be stationed at Brookdale College, with BSU student supporters coordinating the voter registration effort. On Sept 25, BSU collaborated with the Political Science Club and shared in a voter registration drive.
The Black Student Union meets 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in LAH (Larrison Hall,) 108 – 11:30 a.m.
BSU’s mission is “to honor and promote our rich African Heritage. Through diverse programming, education and outreach, the Black Student Union provides stimulating, cultural and intellectual awareness for the edification of Brookdale and its community.”
