Sean Bergin, a reporter for News 12 New Jersey, has resigned following his reckless comments about a police officer’s death.

Sean Bergin’s comments

During a live taping, Sean Bergin claimed the death of a rookie Jersey City police officer can be attributed to the absence of fathers in the African-American community.

The outburst came from Bergin after running a segment on Jersey City police Officer Melvin Santiago, 23, who was killed by 27-year-old Lawrence Campbell while responding to a call about a robbery on Sunday morning.

Campbell reportedly told a witness that he was going to be “famous,”. His widow, Angelique, told News 12 that he should’ve killed more cops if he was going to die in the fashion that he did.

According to Bergin, this “anti-cop mentality” is the result of “young Black men growing up without fathers.” Bergin then proclaimed that most members of the media would lack the courage to speak up like he did.

After initially being suspended, Bergin chose to step down.
