For the second time this year, a person has jumped off the radio tower in Long Branch, NJ.

Man jumps from radio tower in Long Branch

The victim, identified as Christopher Zweidinger, 38, of the Whiting section of Manchester, was pronounced deceased at the scene after he jumped from the Y107 radio tower on Monday and landed in a vacant building, Public Safety Director Jason Roebuck said.

Authorities say Zweidinger’s vehicle was found at the scene, and his identification and a suicide note was found inside.

According to nj.com, police responded around 2:40 p.m. after receiving a call that someone was climbing the tower. The man was “well above” the roofline of nearby building and officers tried to make contact with him using a loudspeaker.

Zweidinger also removed his jacket and threw it to the ground, Roebuck said. Approximately 20 minutes later, he jumped from approximately 200 feet up the tower, went through the roof of the abandoned building and landed on the second floor.

Investigation

The city’s fire department and the Asbury Park Fire Department conducted search and rescue operations to retrieve the body, and efforts were impeded because of the building’s poor state.

Zweidinger was the second person to jump off the tower this year. In April, a 60-year-old Elizabeth resident jumped to his death from the top of the tower.

The tower is located off of Memorial Parkway between Broadway and Belmont Avenue.
