David Mooij, the superintendent of Neptune schools, has died.

David Mooij, the superintendent of Neptune schools, has died.

David Mooij, the superintendent of Neptune Township public schools, has died.

He was 63.

School board president Jason Jones confirmed that Mooij passed away Sunday. Mooij had served as superintendent since 2005.

Mooij joined the Neptune School District in 1973 as a substitute teacher before moving on to teach health and physical education at the middle and high school levels. He also served as the district’s business administrator before becoming the superintendent.

In 2013, he was named Superintendent of the Year by the Monmouth County Association of School Administrators.

He was set to retire this year.
