Ghana Project Session 9 at Asbury Park Middle School.
On December 11, 2015 Asbury Park Middle School students watched a presentation regarding Ghana’s government.
Ghana Project Session 9
This presentation, which was put together by the Ghana students, consisted of a power point and a video.
According to the students of Ghana, Ghana was established as a Democratic Republic. In the republic the people have the power along with the representatives they decide to elect.
The presentation showed that Ghana’s Constitution in 1992 created a system of checks and balances. The students explained under this system of checks and balances you have the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial parts of the government which appeared to be very similar to the United States.
At this point the Ghana students introduced in their presentation the current President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, and his Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur. In addition, the students also showed past presidents from Ghana meeting with the past presidents of the United States. For instance, they showed Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, meet with former U.S. President, John F. Kennedy. They also showed Ghana’s past President, John Agyekum Kufuor, meet with former U.S. President, George W. Bush.
Finally, they showed former President of Ghana, John Atta Mills, meet with current U.S. President Barack Obama. Speaking of Barack Obama, the Ghana students informed APMS student that when Barack Obama came to Ghana, it became Obama Mania.
For example, President Obama’s face appeared in restaurants and t-shirts. After discussing Obama Mania, the presentation went into the mayors of the districts in Ghana and how the mayors consult with the Kings of the districts.
APMS students had the opportunity to ask questions regarding the
presentation such as:
How big of a role does the media play in politics?
Who has more authority, the Kings or the President?
The United States has the Bill of Rights, does Ghana have something
similar?
Did Ghana have any wars?
What was the first president meeting like with Kennedy?
The APMS students really enjoyed the students of Ghana presentation of
their government.
