Desert Storm veteran Keith Roberson, from VFW post in Neptune, took time out of his busy schedule to visit Mr. David Wronko’s 7th grade social studies class at Asbury Park High School. Also attending this seminar were Mr. Eric Schneider’s 8th grade social studies students.
Veteran Keith Roberson visits Asbury Park High School
Mr. Roberson gave a full history lesson regarding his career in the military as well as his job as a NOC Network Engineer for Under Sea Cables and Verizon Business Markets.
He spoke about the hard work he put into passing the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) that allowed him into the military.
From there he talked about performing various duties which involved technology and helping the training of soldiers. In addition, besides his military duties, he talked about his service during Desert Storm.
After Mr. Roberson spoke, the students asked him numerous questions which led to more discussions. For instance, some students asked him about the challenges he faced in the military, the training he had to endure, completing his missions without sleep, and competition in sports in the military such as boxing and taekwondo. Mr. Roberson himself competed in boxing while in the military.
One thing that Mr. Roberson told the students that they thought would be a giant challenge was waking up at 5:00 am to begin basic training. This training involved an immediate two mile run before the sun came up. However, he informed the students that over a period of time that the body would get used to it and grow stronger.
After the Q and A, Mr. Roberson thanked the students for their attention during his presentation and also had pictures taken with them.
Tuskegee Airmen Project
Once his seminar was complete, Mr. Wronko brought Mr. Roberson to Mr. Gould’s engineering class which was currently working on a Tuskegee Airmen project. This would be the second VFW veteran to visit with Wilbur V. Martin being the first.
Mr. Gould and Mr. Roberson had an engaging conversation about their careers, the project involving the Tuskegee Airmen, as well as future projects. Hopefully, Mr. Wronko would like to have the VFW team up with Mr. Gould’s engineering class to work on a future project which would open up more avenues for the students to explore.
