Yaa Asantewaa
The first woman that he gave a presentation on from Ghana was Yaa Asantewaa. Yaa Asantewaa was not only a mother and a farmer but also a human rights activist, leader, and even a queen. She was well known for standing up against British colonialism in defense of the Golden Stool.
Ama Ata Aidoo
The next woman from Ghana that he gave a presentation on was Ama Ata Aidoo. Ama Ata Aidoo was playwright and poet. Her works included The Dilemma of a Ghost, Anowa, Our Sister Killjoy, and Changes. She was awarded the Commonwealth Writers Prize.
Theodosia Okoh
The next woman he spoke about from Ghana was Theodosia Okoh. Thodosia Okoh was an artist and teacher. She also designed the national flag for Ghana in 1957. Thodosia Okoh was also instrumental of the creation of hocky in Ghana.
Esther Afua Ocloo
Another woman he spoke about was Esther Afua Ocloo. Esther Afua Ocloo was instrumental in leading a financial business which granted small loans to help people establish businesses. The goal was to help stimulate the economy in Ghana. During 1976, she was notable for being a founder of the Women’s World Banking.
Mr. Boateng explained that the list of influential women of Ghana was rich in history and went on and on. By doing a regular search on the internet would give and incredible number of names that should be explored for this month of Women’s History.
