On Saturday, June 10, family, friends, and the community, gathered at Second Baptist Church in Long Branch to celebrate the life of Judge Lisa Thornton.

Lisa Payne Thornton passed away suddenly, on May 26, while returning from a trip in Florida.

She was 59.

Thornton was remembered as a highly revered jurist and professional, who had the ability to show compassion even during the most tense moments.

But she was also tough and stern, especially when she fought for her integrity and things she was passionate about.

Thornton was born and bred in Long Branch and spiritually raised at Second Baptist Church.

She was brilliant and this transcended in her work academically and later in her legal career.

Thornton graduated from Rutgers University-Douglass College, with a bachelors in political science. She then obtained a juris doctorate from Rutgers-Newark law school.

She had an unwavering commitment to justice

Thornton began her legal career at Prudential Financial as a trial attorney.

In 1999, she became a municipal judge for Neptune Township and continued to make an impact working with several government administrations.

In 2014, she became the first African American woman to serve as an assignment judge in NJ’s court system for Monmouth County Vicinage.

Thornton had legal acumen that was unmatched. She was a trailblazer in her field and the voice of Black women everywhere.

She was also a people’s advocate.

Thornton spearheaded a statewide criminal justice initiative that addressed prevention, enforcement, and re-entry.

Judge Lisa Thornton was human.

Lisa loved deeply. Whether it was her family, friends, or colleagues, she always made sure to let you know she appreciated you. Her favorite phrase of endearment when greeting you was, “hey, baby!”.

She was a revered jurist but first, she was human who just simply loved life.

She enjoyed pastimes like food, joking around, working out, spending time with family and friends, R&B music, and traveling, which would ultimately be the last thing she did before her untimely passing.

Most of all, Lisa loved the Lord and was never afraid to show it. She gave her all when she was part of the various ministries at Second Baptist, especially the youth ministry as a Sunday School and Vocational Bible school teacher.

She was an inspiration and always extended her hand, spreading her wealth of knowledge. And even though she was well accomplished, she always remained humble.

The message at her celebration of life was clear. Lisa Thornton was special and will always be remembered as one of a kind.

She leaves behind an incredible legacy and a host memories that everyone who loved her will cherish forever.

Lisa Payne Thornton will sorely be missed.
