Art of Social Justice: EmpowHERment

This transformative professional development event aims to deepen educators’ understanding of women’s contributions to social change and the arts.

The event is open to the general public.

Discussions and performances

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Two River Theater and will feature discussions and performances exploring themes of cultural identity, leadership, and resilience.

Teachers attending the event will receive five hours of professional development credits.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore the legacies of notable figures such as Shirley Chisholm and Constance Baker Motley at the
    Thomas Fortune Cultural Center.
  • Discover the vibrant themes of family, identity, and women’s strength through Two River Theater’s production of American Mariachi.
  • Engage in creative writing sessions led by Project Write Now, designed to help educators reflect on
    the day’s powerful themes.
  • The event would be a great opportunity for DEI representatives and those interested in learning more about these Black hidden figures.

“We are thrilled to offer a space where educators and the general public can reflect on the impact of women in social justice movements and translate these lessons into their classrooms,” said Gilda Rogers, Executive Director of the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center.

“It’s more than just a professional
development day, it’s an experience of empowerment for everyone.”
