The Asbury Park Neptune NAACP celebrated their Annual Freedom Fund Dinner Dance and Black History Celebration at the Double Tree Hotel, in Tinton Falls.

This year’s theme “Standing for Freedom, Fighting for the Future”, brought many community leaders out to celebrate the legacy of the NAACP and the continued fight for freedom.

Past and present community leaders were honored for the their hard work in the community.

Honorees

The honorees were Dr. Denise Lowe, superintendent of Asbury Park School District, June West an NJ orator, Michelle R. Burrell the owner/director/choreographer of Asbury Park Academy of Dance, David A. Moij, Neptune Superintendent of Schools, and Pastor Tony D. Miles of Macedonia Baptist Church in Neptune.

The Hall of Fame Inductees was a historical night of recognizing and thanking those members for their many years of hard work and how graciously they have passed the torch on to the younger generation. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees are as follows: Celeste Carter Overby, Emon K Jones, The Reverend Vernon McGowen,Jr., Samuel L. Jones, James D. Williams, Donald C. Smith, ESQ, JD, Mrs. Maxine Loreat Harris Daniels, Thomas Edward Daniels, and Howard L. West. Sr.

The night was filled with talented young people from the Asbury Park Technical Academy of Dance that danced a beautiful silhouette of ballet. Attendees were able to have fun dancing to smooth beats of DJ William Cunningham’s music.

The night was capped with key note speaker Lawrence Hamm, who is a civil rights activist, humanitarian and lecturer that had attendees relentless ear. The Princeton prodigy talked about the history of the NAACP, the importance of maintaining unity with the organization and keeping the fight alive for freedom for all people as he pointed out that it took all people, blacks and whites, to sustain the fight.
