(NJ.COM) – Hurricane Irene has weakened slightly today, with its winds dropping down to 100 mph as it thunders off the South Carolina/Georgia coast.
However, Irene is still forecast to parallel the New Jersey coast Sunday morning as a category 1 hurricane, packing winds of 75 to 95 mph, and the weekend situation statewide remains potentially dangerous, weather forecasters say.
Additionally, Hurricane Irene could still strengthen before it is forecast to impact the North Carolina coast sometime Saturday.

Both New York and New Jersey have declared each state in a “state of emergency” and will have National Guards on hand.
There will be shelters available if you cannot evacuate to a friend’s or family’s home.
